Strengthening Lives

How do you Strengthen Lives? Lives are strengthened when: people in crisis have a trained person to talk with about suicide or death, substance abusers have self help groups and detoxification programs, family members can learn how to cope with an alcoholic family member, neglected and abused children have a friend in court and are safe from abuse, people with HIV-AIDS have help with their medical regimens, families can hold on to their jobs by getting a low interest car repair loan, parents learn how to discipline their children effectively, poor children in West Feliciana Parish have school supplies, children from low income families in St. Helena Parish are ready to learn when they go to elementary school, poor elderly people in rural areas have help with high utility bills and a hot meal, effective counseling helps family members rebuild their relationships, people make the transition from a life of substance abuse and loss to productive independent living and employment, psychiatric treatment is available from qualified professionals in St. James Parish, a community has assets than can help it heal from the fractures caused by racism, single heads of households can get a GED while their children are taken care of in the evening.

A PROBLEM:
·          Often troubled teens leave home before they have finished their education or have jobs to support themselves.
·          Several children in our community suffer from abuse and neglect.

A WAY TO HELP:
·          United Way agencies provide youth and family counseling services and work with youth in transition.
·          Agencies also promote family and individual well-being and help with recovery.
